“‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
God’s Word is every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. God’s Word which He spoke to humanity through His servants were written in books. These books are called the Bible today.
It is interesting to learn how the writers of the books of the Bible gave different descriptions of God’s Word.
In this teaching, I wish to presents 11 ways God’s Word is variously described on the pages of Scripture. They are what I have noticed in the Bible while reading it, meaning that there are other descriptions you and other Bible readers may add.
1. The Law
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:1-2).
2. The Gospel
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet” (Mark 1:1-2).
3. The Word of Truth
“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 1:13).
4. The Word of Faith
“But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim)” (Romans 10:8).
5. The Word of His Grace
“And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).
6. The Word of Righteousness
“For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child” (Hebrews 5:13).
7. The Word of Reconciliation
“…that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).
8. The Word of Life
“Holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain” (Philippians 2:16).
9. The Implanted Word
“Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21).
10. The Water of the Word
“That he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word” (Ephesians 5:26).
11. The Milk of the Word
“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2).
12. The Meat of the Word
“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3, KJV).
13. The Strong Meat of the Word
“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat” (Hebrews 5:12, KJV).
14. The Sword of the Spirit
“Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).
15. The Oracles of God
“Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God” (Romans 3:2).
16. Commandments
“But showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:6).
17. Testimonies
“Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart” (Psalm 119:1-2).
18. Precepts
“The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart” (Psalms 19:8).
