Becoming a Vessel In Your Generation

Becoming a vessel of revival means allowing God to work through your life to bring spiritual awakening, restoration, and transformation to those around you—starting with your family, then your community, school, workplace, and even your nation.

One of the greatest revivalists in the Bible, who brought transformation to his family, his nation, and beyond, was King Josiah.

To fully appreciate the impact of Josiah’s ministry especially in the areas of transformation and leadership, we must first examine the dark spiritual legacy left behind by his grandfather, Manasseh, and his father, Amon.

Their reigns plunged Judah into idolatry, violence, and rebellion against God, setting the stage for the urgent need for revival in Josiah’s generation (2 Kings 21).

The nation had fallen into deep moral and spiritual decay. Idolatry was not only tolerated but institutionalised. This corruption affected leadership, the priesthood, and the people, leading to a hardened national conscience. This dark period prepared the way for Josiah’s revival.

King Josiah began to reign at the age of eight. He sought the Lord at sixteen and initiated major spiritual reforms in Judah by the age of twenty.

He purged the land of idolatry—tearing down altars, images, and shrines to Baal and Asherah. At twenty-six, while repairing the temple, the Book of the Law was discovered.

Upon hearing it read, Josiah humbled himself, tore his clothes, and sought God’s direction. He then led the people in renewing their covenant with the Lord, restored proper worship, and removed all traces of idolatry from the land.

His revival was marked by repentance, a return to God’s Word, and national reform (2 Chronicles 34, 35)

In every generation, God seeks vessels through whom He can move in power and glory. But like King Manasseh, we can allow idols and altars to rise within us.

Manasseh defiled the temple of the Lord by building altars and setting up carved images of idols right inside God’s holy dwelling (2 Kings 21:4–7).

Today, we are the temple of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19), and though we may not build physical altars, we can erect spiritual ones—idols of pride, self-will, greed, compromise, lukewarmness, unforgiveness, fear of man, worldliness, bitterness, and more.

These things take root in our hearts, dishonour God’s presence, and hinder the flow of His Spirit in and through us.

But there is hope. Like Josiah, we can choose a different path. We can humble ourselves before the Lord, tear down every idol, destroy every unholy altar, and cleanse the temple of our hearts.

We can return to the Word, rediscover God’s presence, and rededicate ourselves as vessels of honour.

Will you be like Josiah in your generation? Let us rise up and become temples filled not with idols but with God’s presence, glory, and power. Let our lives be altars of worship and surrender.

This is how we become vessels of revival—by giving God His rightful place in us. Let the cry of our hearts be: “Lord, I surrender all. Cleanse me. Fill me. Use me for Your glory. Let revival begin in me.”
