The Progressive Restoration Of Glory: Israel’s Experience

We have highlighted this truth: Adam lived for God’s glory before the fall. Sin moved him from the glorious position and privilege he had in Eden. He thus fell short of the glory God intended for humanity (Romans 3:23).

However, God did not abandon His ultimate purpose in creating humanity. Instead, He began to work progressively toward the restoration of that glory.

One major stage in this restoration was the calling of Abraham and the establishment of Israel as a covenant nation (Genesis 12:2; Exodus 19:5–6).

God adopted Israel as His firstborn son and gave them the law, the priesthood, and the promises. Israel primarily experienced God’s glory through manifestations of His presence and extraordinary demonstrations of His power (Exodus 4:22; Romans 9:4).

God manifested His glory as He led Israel through the wilderness by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21–22).

God’s glory also filled the Tabernacle when Moses completed it and filled Solomon’s Temple when it was dedicated to Him (Exodus 40:34–35; 2 Chronicles 5:13–14).

Furthermore, through obedience to God’s law, the Israelites were to make God’s glory known among the nations. Israel was called to be a people who would display God’s character, holiness, goodness, and mighty works to the surrounding nations.

Thus, the glory experienced by Israel under the Old Covenant was an important stage in God’s progressive plan to restore to humanity what was lost through the fall.
