Do Not Become Tired Of Doing Good Because of People’s Ungratefulness

Human beings can be either morally good or bad toward their neighours based on their actions, deeds, conducts or behaviours.

While those who are known to be good regularly do good things to make others happy, those who are recognized to be bad usually do bad things to make others sad.

People who are grateful, kind, truthful, honest, faithful, loyal, generous, appreciative, supportive, humble, obedient, and above all loving make those around them smile.

However, those who are ungrateful, cruel, deceitful, dishonest, unfaithful, disloyal, stingy, unappreciative, discouraging, proud, rebellious, and above all careless cause others to scowl.

All born-again Christians, people who have a relationship with Jesus Christ, are expected to do good to their neighbours including their enemies.

This expectation is based on the unique and sweet influence of the Holy Spirit who lives in their hearts on their actions, deeds, conducts and behaviours.

Thus, in his letter to Christians in Thessalonica, Paul writes, “As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good” (2 Thessalonians 3:13).

The Apostle makes a similar appeal to Christians in Galatia saying, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

He exhorts fellow disciples of Jesus Christ not to grow weary of doing good. This means, Christians should not be tired of helping, supporting, giving or advising their neighbours.

By his words, Paul draws attention to the fact that Christians’ intention to do good may be challenged. In other words, they may, sometimes, be discouraged or tempted to give up.

This occurs when people you do good to or help in one way or another to succeed in life, refuse to reciprocate, be unappreciative, be ungrateful and ultimately repay you with evil.

People must learn to be grateful and remember also to tell friends, spouses, families the good things others have done for them when they are tempted to speak about their mistakes, weaknesses, failures or shortcomings.

Unappreciation, ungratefulness  or failure to reciprocate the good done makes people tired of continuing to do good which eventually robs people of their blessings.

But the apostle Paul encourages Christians not to grow weary in doing good, stressing that in due season we will reap, if we continue.

We must continue to do good to people with our mind and heart focused on God who justly rewards everyone according to their works.

It was this understanding that certainly kept Christ Jesus going about doing good to people, healing those who were oppressed of the devil, feeding the hungry, teaching and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God (Acts 10:38).

Our Lord did all these good things to people who would not want to hear His Word for them to repent and be reconciled to God.

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).
