THE EARLY church paid attention to music. Paul wrote that, “…but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and SPIRITUAL SONGS, SINGING AND MAKING MELODY TO THE LORD WITH YOUR HEART…” (Ephesians 5:18 –19).
Again, in Colossians 3:16, Paul taught “…singing psalms and hymns and SPIRITUAL SONGS…”
The verses of Scripture above reminds us that both the Praise and Worship Team and the entire congregation should first be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Then, we are to sing spiritual songs or make music to the Lord with our hearts (spirits).
Music is important in Christian worship but there is a big question to ask. How many singers and instrumentalists in our churches today are Holy Spirit-filled?
We should understand that it is not the melody that matters in Christian music. It is also not just about the loudness of the music or its tunefulness that matters.
What really matters is the spiritual state of the ministers of the music. Do they truly have the Holy Spirit in their hearts or upon them to minister before the Lord? Are they even born again?
The absence of the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is the reason music in most churches today is nothing but A COMPLETE PIECE OF ENTERTAINMENT.
I believe you do not disagree with me that most Christian music today is just noise without the Spirit’s power backing it.
A pure Christian music should not entertain people and just move them to dance to show off. Our music should not lead ‘baby and child Christians’ into temptation, lead believers to dance before their girlfriends and boyfriends or spouses (Exodus 32:18–19).
Our God is absolutely orderly, perfect and excellent, reigning as holy and righteous King, who inhabits the harmonious praises of His Spirit-filled people.
Now, if the praise is not Spirit-inspired, God cannot inhabit it. Thus, the absence of the Holy Spirit in Christian music has created fertile grounds for Satan and his demons to dominate many churches in our day.
The time has come for pastors to diligently consider and pay greater attention to the music department and make the necessary changes to promote its excellence for the glory of God.
