How Could Jesus Be God’s Son When God Didn’t Have Wife?

CHRISTIANS REFER to Jesus Christ as the Son of God. But some unbelievers have a problem with this reference. They mockingly wonder why Jesus should be called the Son of God when God did not have a wife to reproduce Him.

Critics therefore urge Christians to stop calling Jesus Christ the Son of God. But it is not inappropriate for Christians to refer to Jesus as the Son of God. The truth is that Christians did not decide it for Jesus. They learnt it from the Bible. Long before Christ came into the world, the Angel Gabriel had announced to Mary who gave birth to Him that He would be called the Son of God.

“And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be CALLED THE SON OF THE MOST HIGH” (Luke 1:30-31).

Gabriel did not end his conversation with Mary but kept on speaking, explaining why Jesus would be called the Son of God.

“And Mary said to the angel, ‘How will this be, since I am a virgin?’ And the angel answered her. The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be CALLED HOLY – THE SON OF GOD’ (Luke 1:34-35). You can see that Christians did not decide to call Jesus the Son of God, but the angel Gabriel announced it before the conception and birth of Jesus Christ.

Moreover, Scripture makes it clear that Jesus was not conceived of man, Joseph, but by the power of the Holy Spirit who is God. That is why the angel said Jesus would be called “holy”. That meant Christ Jesus was separated, set apart, and unique from every human being. Yes, the Lord Jesus was a unique Son of God in His own distinct class without any history of committing a sin.

It is not only thoughtless but also blasphemous to interpret the passage of Scripture above to mean that the Holy Spirit slept with Mary to conceive Jesus Christ. Throughout the Bible, the Holy Spirit comes upon believers and gives them power to perform superhuman and extraordinary things.

Miraculous conception in the womb of a woman by the power of the Holy Spirit is not impossible with God. There is absolutely nothing God cannot do. As predicted, Jesus Christ was conceived and born by the power of the Holy Spirit. This makes Jesus the Son of the Holy Spirit who is God. The angel Gabriel was therefore right in announcing that Jesus “… shall be called the Son of God (Luke 1: 35).

For this reason, it is wrong for schools to teach that Joseph is the father of Jesus Christ. Perhaps, they may teach that Joseph is the stepfather of Jesus.

Moreover, considering the circumstance surrounding the conception and birth of Jesus, Mary is fit to be addressed as the mother of Jesus, but she cannot be addressed as the wife of God. Because the Holy Spirit did not marry her or sleep with her as a husband will do with his wife.

If the Holy Spirit had slept with Mary in order to conceive Jesus He would have committed the sin of adultery since He had not legally married her. Clearly, the conception of Jesus in the womb of Mary was miraculous, a supernatural act of the Holy Spirit.

Let those who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit receive understanding of this teaching and share it to build the faith of other Christian believers throughout the world.
