JUDGING  PROPHETIC UTTERANCE

WE CHRISTIANS don’t have to cynically reject every prophecy, but we also don’t have to gullibly believe every inspired utterance. We all need to put every prophetic Word to test – 1Thes. 5:19-21.

The reality is that there are factors that should play into our judgment in the matter of testing prophecies.

The first factor that we need to consider in our evaluation of prophetic Word is: every prophecy must line up with God’s Word. The Spirit and the Word must always be in harmony and in agreement. The Holy Spirit will never inspire anyone to prophesy for the one to contradict the written Word.

The second factor that we need to prove prophecy is: we must determine the source of inspiration. Spirit-inspired prophecies will liberate men and not hold them in bondage; it will glorify and honour Jesus, and not any individual; it will draw men closer to God and Christ, and not men ; and it will give testimony concerning Jesus Christ for what inspires prophecy is the truth about the Lord (Rev. 19:10).

The next factor that must be considered for us to hold firmly to the prophetic Word is the witness of the Spirit in the hearts of others so that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every prophetic Word can be established.
