Paul called Jesus Christ, God
“To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is THE CHRIST, WHO IS GOD OVER ALL, blessed forever. Amen” (Romans 9: 5).
Again, the Gentile-sent Apostle revealed that Christ was God in his letter to Titus.
“Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our GREAT GOD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works” (Titus 2: 13- 14).
Once more, Paul states that Christ is God in his letter to the church in Colossae.
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, weather thrones or dominions or rules or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, and church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (Colossians 1: 15- 19).
I have seen another scriptural verse in which Paul again calls Jesus Christ God. He told the Pastors of the church at Ephesus that the One who shed His blood to obtain the Church is God. And clearly there can be no else than Jesus Christ.
“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, TO CARE FOR THE CHURCH OF GOD, WHICH HE OBTAINED WITH HIS OWN BLOOD” (Ephesians 20: 28).
Brethren, when we read our Bible carefully, we will see that Jesus Christ is described as the “Son of David”, “Son of Man” and “Son of God.” These teach us about the humanity and divinity of Jesus. He was God in the body of man. He was not just a man as we are. Therefore, on one occasion, Jesus sought the opinion of the Pharisees about the Messiah. He asked them: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”
“Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, ‘The son of David.’ He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put my your enemies under your feet? If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son? And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions” (Matthew 22: 41- 46).
David spoke those words prophetically about Jesus in Psalm 110:1. Jesus quoted that Scripture to teach the Pharisees that He was greater than David. In fact, He was David’s Lord who is God.
Moreover, the Prophet Isaiah prophesied the divinity of Christ the Lord.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, MIGHTY GOD, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9: 6).
Above all, God the Father called the Son, Jesus Christ, God.
“Of the angels he says, ‘He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.’ But of the SON HE SAYS, YOUR THRONE, O GOD is forever and ever, the sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of your kingdom” (Hebrews 1: 8).
Brethren, only God is worthy of worship and receives worship from angels and the saints. And if the Apostle John, who was a witness of the suffering and glorification of Christ saw in a vision that Jesus Christ and the Father received worship together, then I cannot but believe and confess Christ Jesus is God.
I do not understand why many doubt the deity of Jesus Christ. But I am persuaded that Jesus Christ is God. And I believe He is. As finite men, we may be defective in spiritual knowledge; we are not all-knowing. Unless God gives us revelations we may not know and understand many things about Jesus Christ.
This is why Christians should not be discouraged about what people say about Jesus Christ. People may doubt the deity of Jesus Christ, but those who are genuinely born of God are convinced in their spirits that Jesus Christ is God. He is God who took the form of a man, came and dwelt among men as a servant so He could suffer death in order to save man from the bondage of sin and eternal death or eternal separation from God.
