We established in a previous article that the Church is God’s instrument to carry out His will, bring salvation to the lost, and reflect His kingdom on earth.
Therefore, God expects the Church to dwell in a continual state of revival.
However, revival is not automatic. Awakening, renewal, and restoration require preparation. The Church must actively make way for revival.
The first vital factor in preparing the way for God to restore spiritual vitality, passion for Him, and a fresh move of the Holy Spirit in the Church is humility (2 Chronicles 7:14).
The Church must understand that revival is not the work of man; it is the work of God and His grace. Humility thus attracts God’s presence, power, glory, and influence. God dwells with the humble to revive them.
“For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones” (Isaiah 57:15).
Notice that God also dwells with individuals who have contrite hearts to revive them. This leads us to the second fundamental step that opens the way for revival—genuine repentance.
Seasons of revival come from the presence of the Lord as we turn wholeheartedly to God with deeply broken and repentant hearts (Acts 3:19).
The third critical step that prepares the path for revival is the cleansing of unscriptural practices (Mark 7:13).
We must remove unbiblical practices, man-made traditions, and false doctrines to create an environment where the Holy Spirit can move freely.
God can not pour His Spirit on a church that clings to error and compromises with the world. True revival comes when we allow Christ to cleanse everything that is not of Him.
In the second part, we will explore other primary prerequisites that set the stage for revival.
