Recognising the need for personal revival is crucial – revival begins with self-awareness. It starts with honest self-examination. We must know where we need God’s refreshing touch and invite His presence to revive our inner life by taking time to conduct a spiritual diagnosis in these eight areas:
A. Hunger for God and His Presence
“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.” – Psalm 42:1
Revival doesn’t begin with activities or church programmes—it begins with people whose hearts truly pant after God. Just like the deer seeks water not out of luxury but necessity, revival is born when believers recognise their absolute need for God’s glory and presence. It is that holy dissatisfaction that says: “Lord, I can’t live without You. Revive me again. Let my heart burn for You like never before.”
Revival doesn’t begin in the pulpit, in a crowd, or at a special programme—it begins in the heart. It is a personal awakening to God that leads to lasting transformation. Before there can be revival in the Church or in the nation, there must first be revival in you.
Begin by asking yourself:
1. Is my desire for God growing or fading?
2. Do I long for a deeper relationship with Him through prayer and reading the Bible?
3. Are my quiet times dry or often skipped?
4. When I worship, is it merely a habit, or do I feel it with my whole heart?
If you recognise a lack in any of these areas, ask God to revive your spirit and renew your desire for His presence.
B. Passion for God’s Word
“Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.” – Jeremiah 15:16
1. Has the joy of reading the Bible diminished in your life?
2. Has Bible study become more of a duty than a delight?
3. Do you find little motivation to meditate on Scripture?
4. Does the Word fail to inspire obedience and boost your faith?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, pray for your love for the Word to be restored.
C. Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is our guide, convicter, and purifier.
1. Do you remain alert to sin and conviction?
2. Has compromise crept into your life?
3. Do behaviours once condemned now pass unnoticed?
When your sensitivity has faded, ask the Spirit to renew your conscience and help you live in holiness.
D. Love and Unity with Others
A revived heart shows real love, forgiveness, and unity.
1. Are you living in love, humility, and forgiveness?
2. Do you truly value fellowship and oneness with other believers?
3. Do you feel a coldness in your love for others?
4. Have you withdrawn from church life, seeing ministry as a burden rather than a joy?
When these issues appear, ask God to fill you with renewed love for Him and His people.
E. Fruitfulness and Service
Personal revival reignites your sense of purpose and service.
1. Do you have a burning desire to serve God and those around you?
2. Are your spiritual gifts being actively used to build up the church?
3. Have you withdrawn from participating in ministry?
If you sense a loss of zeal and direction, ask the Holy Spirit to quicken you towards a more purposeful and productive life.
F. Joy and Peace in the Christian Walk
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13
1. Has your Christian walk become heavy or joyless?
2. Are you caught up in routine, missing out on vibrant joy?
3. Does the peace of Christ rule over your heart in difficult times?
If joy and peace seem absent, seek God’s help to restore the joy of your salvation and grant you a peace that surpasses all understanding.
G. Burden for Souls and Evangelism
A true revival carries a deep concern for the eternal destinies of others.
1. Do you feel a strong urgency to share the Gospel?
2. Has evangelism become an afterthought?
3. Do you lack passion for reaching the lost?
Pray for God to ignite your heart with fresh zeal for sharing His message.
H. Spiritual Pride and Complacency
Finally, consider the role of humility in your spiritual journey.
1. Do you compare yourself with others instead of focusing on Christ?
2. Is there evidence of genuine transformation in your habits and speech?
3. Do you lean on your own strength rather than God’s grace?
If pride or complacency has crept in, humble yourself before the Lord and ask for a renewed commitment to spiritual growth.
A Prayer for Personal Revival:
“My God and Father, revive me according to Your Word. Renew my hunger for You, awaken my love, rekindle my passion for Your presence, and empower me to bear fruit in Your service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
