Responding To God’s Stirring

God calls people to fulfil His plans and purposes with their gifts, talents, and resources.

He communicates His calling through visions, dreams, prophetic utterances, angelic visitations, inner convictions, and the guidance of the Spirit.

However, the primary way God calls His people to contribute financially to His purposes on earth is by stirring their hearts.

God initiates the inner prompting or awakening within them, creating the desire and longing to give in their hearts.

For instance, God commanded His covenant people, Israel, to build Him a tabernacle so He could dwell in their midst.

He specifically instructed Moses to receive offerings from only those whose hearts prompted them to give willingly.

Those whose hearts were stirred and who had willing spirits offered more than enough for the building of the tabernacle (Ex. 25:1-2; 35:21; 36:2-7).

Throughout the Old Testament, we find other instances where God stirred the spirits of men and women to contribute to His plans and purposes (Ez. 1:1-7; Hag. 1:14).

Under the New Covenant, God Himself works in us by His grace to create in us the power and desire to do what pleases Him.

As we yield to the grace of giving, it awakens in us the longing to contribute, regardless of the circumstances (Phil. 2:13 NLT; 2 Cor. 8:1 AMP).

Therefore, we can understand why the Bible instructs us to give as we purpose in our hearts, not in response to pressure, compulsion, and necessity (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The reality is that as we respond to the inner prompting or awakening initiated by God, we can step out and cheerfully and willingly contribute to the advancement of God’s kingdom.
