‘Scatter My Money, Gold Along The Procession to the Cemetery’

THE EYE of the LORD God is on the poor. Thus, throughout the Bible, God asks the rich to support those who are poor.

It is no wonder that some rich people see the need to help the poor. Others are very stingy. They watch the needy suffer hunger.

A pastor said, “It is a rare privilege to be in a position to give. A time to give is a time to show remorse not a time to show off. Help is a great investment.”

Do we work hard to build houses, buy cars, establish companies and save huge sums of money for ourselves or for others?

Well, death answers this question better. Alexander the Great, a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon, understood the worthlessness of accumulating wealth without helping the poor. On his death bed, the king summoned his generals and told them his three ultimate wishes:

The best doctors should carry his coffin;

The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones etc.) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery; and

His hands should be let loose, hanging outside the coffin for all to see!

One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests, asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say.

I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that, in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal.

I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, stays on earth.

I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people will understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is time.

We do not take to our grave any material wealth, although our good deeds can be our travelers’ cheques.

Time is our most precious treasure because it is limited. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time.

Let’s use our time to serve God and humanity and fulfill the ministry entrusted to us.

Let’s honour Christ Jesus with our substances by helping the poor, those who need help.
