There are many signs that show that a pastor preaches or teaches by the Holy Spirit. In this short article, I wish to expose you to some of these marks.
First of all, in 1 Corinthians 12:3, Paul indicates that a pastor who speaks in or by the Holy Spirit does not call Jesus accursed.
“Therefore I want you to understand that NO ONE SPEAKING IN THE SPIRIT OF GOD ever says Jesus is accursed” (1 Corinthians 12:3).
This shows that ministers who speak by the Holy Spirit bless, exalt and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and abide in His doctrine (John 16:14). They speak about His finished redemptive and restorative work on the Cross.
As they preach and teach about Christ Jesus, Christ is formed in the heart of those who are born again (Galatians 4:19).
This helps them to bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control Galatians 5:22-23).
These eventually help in building Christ-like character in believers who obediently yield to the leadings and suggestions of the Holy Spirit.
Moreover, they never peddle the word or grace of God (2 Corinthians 2:17). Thus, they do not heal the sick, deliver the afflicted, clean the leper, open the blind eye and set the captive free at a monetary charge.
They do not allow the love of money to dictate to them how they should serve the Lord or who they should minister to.
Again, knowing that all Scripture come by the inspiration of God, genuine church leaders refuse to speak their own words, but the very words put into their hearts by the Holy Spirit.
For this reason, they spend quality time to study the Scriptures to show themselves approved unto God, They meditate in it, day and night as God expects of them (Joshua 1:8).
By this, they are able to present messages inspired by the Spirit of God, thereby preaching and teaching about Jesus Christ – His deity, offices, graces, works, death, resurrection and so on. I mean, they preach the full gospel.
Acts 4:31 states that the early ministers were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
This indicates that a preacher who speaks by the Holy Spirit is not timid but declares the truth with courage and conviction, even when it is unpopular.
Now, it is high time we ministers honestly subject ourselves to critical self-examination to see if we are in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5).
We need to ask ourselves if truly we speak by the Holy Spirit or communicate divine will of God to meet the needs of His people.
I appeal, in conclusion, that those of us who have gone astray humbly repent, return to our merciful God, keep His commands and serve by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus warns us to, “Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first” (Revelation 2:5).
