The Destructive Nature of Sin (1)

WHEREVER YOU hear about stealing, killing and destruction you hear about Satan at work. Satan, lawlessness and sin are inseparable.

Sin is any act which misses the mark or standard of God. It is the transgression of the Word of God. Sin is lawlessness or unrighteousness (1 John 3:4).

A person sins if he murders, exploits, cheats, wastes food, pollutes the environment or rejects God’s salvation plan through Christ Jesus.

Sin is a powerful destroyer. It is a wicked killer. Sin got Judas Iscariot killed. King Nebuchadnezzar was driven from among men into the bush and made to eat grass like an ox because of sin.

The sin of sexual immorality ruined kingship King Solomon and the ministry of Sampson. It caused destruction to Sodom and Gomorrah and the people of Noah’s day?

In our day, many people are dying for committing sins. Sin is not fun; it is deadly. This is why when Jesus saves and heals people, He tells them to go and sin no more.

People who practice sin or live in unrighteousness are slaves; they are slaves to sin. One day, Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:34).

The Lord Jesus Christ hints that sin is a master; it has slaves. According to the words of the Saviour of the world, people who practice sin are its slaves.

A person who is strongly influenced and controlled by something is a slave, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines.

Sin has no respect for any person; man without Christ is vulnerable to sin’s power. This means a person may be a king, president, security officer, politician, scientist, or journalist, but if sin controls his thought, decisions, actions or speech, he is a slave. A fake man of God or Christian is under sin’s dominion too.

A slave has no power of his own to free himself. Sometimes, a sinner may try to stop practicing a particular sinful act, but he will lack the ability to resist the urge in his heart.

In such a situation, people may see him to have stopped committing the act physically, but they will not know that he is still committing the act in his heart.

A person may sin within or without. This is why the Lord Jesus Christ taught that, “You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already COMMITTED ADULTERY WITH HER IN HIS HEART” (Matthew 5: 27- 28).

No man can by his self-effort stop sinning. He may try but it will only be an act of futility. A sinful person is in spiritual bondage; he is not free to do the will of God. He is already condemned to destruction.

The Bible says the wages of sin is death. In other words, the reward for indulging in unrepentant sin is death. It may be physical or spiritual death.

Many people including disobedient Christians experience the destructive nature of sin. Sin breaks marriages, tears families apart, destroys businesses, hampers national cohesion and development, creates disaffection in relationships and rips the protective power of God over followers of Christ. Sin is deadly. It takes people to hell to suffer eternal torment.
