God desires that Christian believers respond to His love so that its influence, effect, and impact can be profoundly felt in their lives. Christians thus respond to the Father’s love by loving Him, keeping the New Covenant law of love.
John 13:34-35
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
We must understand that we are to love one another JUST AS CHRIST LOVED US and laid down His life for us. The Church should continually reflect on how Christ sacrificed His life for it, as described in Ephesians 5:2 and 1 John 3:16.
Jesus, who shared in the fullness of God’s power, glory, and majesty in eternity past, set aside His divine attributes and became a servant to reconcile us to God because of His love for us (John 1:1-3; Philippians 2:6-7).
During His time on earth, Christ demonstrated His love towards mankind through His teachings, healing ministry, interactions with the marginalized, and the social barriers He broke.
On the cross of Calvary, Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice to reconcile believers to God, the ultimate expression of His love for us. Furthermore, in His agony on the cross, He not only forgave His enemies but also prayed for their forgiveness.
God has poured His own love—everlasting, pure, perfect, sacrificial, selfless, and forgiving—into our hearts, enabling us to love one another as Christ loved us (Romans 5:5).
The love of Christ should be the compelling, driving, and guiding force in our lives. Walking in the consciousness of Christ’s love will inspire us to love one another and live for God, making it evident that we are His disciples (2 Corinthians 5:14; John 13:35).
