True Christians everywhere should know that they are the aroma of Christ to God in the community in which they live. The early Church lived with this knowledge, so Paul wrote:
“For we are the AROMA OF CHRIST TO GOD among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life” (2 Corinthians 2:15).
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word, “aroma” means a noticeable and pleasant smell. This means that true Christians especially leaders carry the pleasant scent of Jesus Christ on themselves.
Through their commitment to the preaching of the gospel of Christ, faithful apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers and the entire Christian community are perceived as the incense crushed and burned which is smelt as sweet smelling fragrance.
Children of God do not possess and emit this aroma of their own ability, but through the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit. It is all by the grace of God. You should remember that without the Spirit of Christ, pastors will be empty and ordinary as anyone else.
But by the special grace of God, Christian ministers carry on themselves special air of dignity and honour. This comes as a result of their deep relationship with the glorified Lord, Jesus Christ, from whom all good and perfect gifts come.
Through this sweet-scented presence of Christ on them, some mighty men in society kneel before them to receive prayers for healing, salvation, deliverance and all of God’s blessings.
Indeed, a Christian leader is an aroma of Christ to God. This is why the Bible calls on servants of God to live above reproach and walk worthy of their calling.
We must humble ourselves and do well to depend upon the grace and anointing of the Spirit of God.
I pray that the Lord Himself will continue to grant us the grace to live above reproach and be faithful in abiding in Him.
