Two Groups of Christians

By James Quansah

“Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people,” (John 2:23-24).

The passage of Scripture above helps us to know that there are two groups of believers following Christ. The first are those who follow Him only to receive His miracles or breakthroughs.

They are the believers who often move from one prophet to another. Though they appear to be Christians, the Bible says, Jesus does not trust them. And if Jesus Christ does not trust them, then, you know that they are not saved.

The second group are the people who follow the Lord Jesus for the salvation of their souls and then trust Him for His miracles. They believe in Him not after seeing His miracles but after hearing the Word of truth, the gospel of salvation.

These are the believers the Lord Jesus commits Himself to. Why? Because the Lord knows that their motive or aim of following Him is in agreement with the main purpose of His death, burial and resurrection. Christ died mainly to save souls from sin, make them right with God and to restore fellowship between them and God.

Often members of the first group do not pay attention to hearing the gospel in order to genuinely believe in Jesus, repent of their sins and receive the Holy Spirit to be made true children of God and grow up spiritually as the members of the second group do.

This is the situation in which many believers find themselves these days. Unfortunately, many people call members of both groups Christians, but God calls only the members of the second group who have the Holy Spirit His true children (Romans 8: 9, 14).
