We Will Stop Telling Lies If We Know These Things

By James Quansah

MANY CHRISTIANS will stop telling lies if they know what you are about to read in this short article. The truth is that liars don’t escape punishment.

The Bible says, “A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish” (Proverbs 19:9.

Liars suffer at the hands of fellow men and God. Liars always suffer shame and disgrace, distrust and rejection, curse and eventually eternal damnation in hell fire (Revelation (21:8).

When Ananias and Sapphira lied, they died (Acts 5:1-10).

What Then Must We Do?
Several passages of the Bible warn Christians to stop lying. We must take a bold stand like Job and stop sinning. We must say ‘no’ to lies.

Job said, “…as long as my breath is in me, and the Spirit of God is my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit” (Job 27:2-5).

Similarly, God through Moses, warns us: “…you shall not lie to another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:11-12).

Under the New Testament, Paul, the apostle, writes, “…let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbour, for we are members one to another” (Ephesians 4:25).

Again, Paul writes, “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices…” (Colossians 3:9-10).

Why Should We Stop Lying?
Now, why does God ask us to stop speaking lies. There must be important reasons behind God’s warning.

First, we should stop lying because we desire life and want to live long on earth (Psalm 34:12-13).

We should stop speaking lies because we are not afraid or coward to bear the consequences of telling the truth.

Again, we should quit peddling lies because we are born again in Christ Jesus and have put off the old nature.

Moreover, it is an abomination to God and finally we should stop lying in order to promote peace in the world.

We must quit lying so as to avoid being punished and to honour the name of God in our speech.
