Knowing God Brings About Humility

Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3).

A deep knowledge of God leads to humility or meekness. A person may usually be proud or haughty when they are depending on some human achievement or privileged position in life, like being; rich, learned, skilful, the occupant of a high office, a ruler, a celebrity, etc. They may become proud because they consider themselves exalted above those who are not in their class.

Moses is described as the most humble man on the face of the earth in his day. This was due to his intimate knowledge of God. He was the only man in the OT that God spoke face to face to; all others were spoken to in visions and dreams  (Num 12:6-8; Deut 34:10).

However, God called him whilst he was shepherding sheep, belonging to his father-in-law (Ex 3:1-4), and made him great and the most powerful prophet ever (Deut 34:11,12), so he really had nothing to boast of except the Lord.

Every person is a sinner before God so is disqualified from coming before Him. It is He who chooses to call them to Him, so they must be humbled by the access granted them. They are usually, not; the wise, the powerful, the noble or the ones who matter (1cor 1:26-28).

Since God is incomparable in knowledge, wisdom, power, wealth, honour, glory, etc. everything a person is or possesses becomes worthless before Him. Therefore, the basis for boasting of any person, crumbles in His presence (29).

Only Jesus Christ was qualified to boast in the presence of God for He was the righteous and holy Son of God. Yet, He became the most humble, even more humble than Moses. He obeyed God by serving people and even sacrificing His life on the cross to save them.

Because it is grace that allows any person to get to God in Christ, all who get to Him have no merit, so must be humble before Him and boast in Christ only.

PRAYER: Father, thank you for giving freely the most priceless possession; eternal life, to those who believe in Christ. May this gift of grace humble every recipient and leave them with nothing to boast about, except in Him. Amen.
