The Fall From Glory

Adam’s fall was much more than the eating of a forbidden fruit. The eating of the fruit was merely the outward act; the real issue was the deeper spiritual failure that led to it.

Adam reached beyond God’s provision. Though he had already been created in God’s image and likeness, he accepted the serpent’s suggestion that he needed something more (Genesis 3:4).

Adam elevated the serpent’s voice above God’s voice. God had clearly said, “You shall not eat of it, for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:16–17), but the serpent contradicted God’s Word. Adam chose to believe the serpent’s word rather than trust the Word of his Creator.

He also failed to exercise his God-given dominion over the creature. Instead of ruling over the serpent, he allowed the serpent to influence him.

The fall was, therefore, not merely the breaking of a command; it was a rejection of God’s order and a transfer of trust from the Creator to the creature. Adam willingly surrendered himself to a new master (Romans 6:16).

Adam thus turned away from the source of his glory and fell from the glorious position God had given him. This gives deeper meaning to Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Because Adam stood as the representative head of humanity, his fall affected the entire human race (Acts 17:26; Romans 5:19). Sin did not merely make man guilty; sin robbed man of the glory for which he was created.

But the story does not end with the fall. Through Jesus Christ, God has provided redemption and restoration. What was lost through Adam’s disobedience has been restored through Christ’s redemptive work.
