“And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18 AMP).
One of the greatest privileges given to believers in Christ is the privilege of beholding the glory of the Lord. This privilege is not reserved for a select group of spiritual people. In Christ, we all have access to God’s presence and glory.
The expression “with unveiled face” speaks of the removal of the spiritual veil that prevented people under the Old Covenant from fully seeing and understanding the glory revealed through the Scriptures. In Christ, the veil is removed (2 Corinthians 3 :13-16).
God’s glory is supremely revealed in Jesus Christ. As John declares, “We saw His glory… full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). When we behold Christ, we see the character of God revealed in human life—His holiness, humility, love, grace, righteousness and faithfulness.
Paul says we are “seeing as in a mirror.” The Word of God reveals Christ to us, and as we continually behold Him in the Word, we see who He is and how He lived. The more we behold Him, the more His image is formed in us.
The purpose of beholding is therefore transformation. We do not merely behold Christ to gain knowledge about Him; we behold Him so that we may become increasingly like Him.
As our minds are renewed by the Word, the Holy Spirit works within us, transforming our character, attitudes, words and conduct into the likeness of Christ.
This transformation is “from glory to glory.” It is progressive. As we continue to behold Christ, we continue to grow in His character and increasingly reflect Him in our daily lives.
We behold, but the Holy Spirit transforms.We look into the Word, and the Spirit works the Word into us.We behold Christ, and His image is increasingly reflected through us.
The Christian life is therefore not merely about knowing about Christ, but about beholding Christ, becoming like Christ and reflecting Christ.
May we continually behold the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces and, through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, be changed from glory to glory into the image of Christ.
