God commissioned Moses to deliver His covenant people, the Israelites, from Egypt—but His ultimate purpose extended beyond them to the nations.
Through the plagues, God demonstrated His power by confronting and judging the gods of Egypt, revealing His supremacy.
As a result, a mixed multitude—non-Israelites who witnessed His mighty acts—joined the Israelites in their deliverance from Egypt (Exodus 12:38).
Significantly, before the final plague—which directly confronted Pharaoh himself—God redefined the Israelites’ calendar. He established that month as the first of the year, marking it as the beginning of redemption, the institution of Passover, and a new beginning for His people (Exodus 12:1-2)
Just as God delivered His covenant people, along with a mixed multitude, from Egypt as one holy nation in the first month—through the blood and His mighty power—so also He will redeem a great multitude from every tongue, tribe, and nation unto Himself in the prophetic first month on His calendar.
This is the season in which He has promised to come to us as the former and latter rain (Joel 2:23, 28).
In this appointed time, God has declared that He will show signs both on the earth—blood, fire, and pillars of smoke—and in the heavens, where the sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, heralding the great and awesome day of the Lord (Joel 2:28–32).
There will be a powerful demonstration on earth of all that the blood of Jesus Christ secured through His redemptive work—the Blood—alongside the Fire of the Spirit’s empowerment, and the Pillar of Smoke representing the manifest glory of God.
In the heavens, the Lord will appear in all His glory, accompanied by the saints—the spirits and souls of those who have died in Christ. They will not return with their glorified bodies, but then they shall be clothed with them in fulfilment of the resurrection promise (1 Thessalonians 4:14–17; 1 Corinthians 15:51–53).
This glorious revelation will be visible for all to behold (Isaiah 40:5). The sun will not literally be darkened, but in comparison to the brightness of the glory revealed, it will appear as though the sun has turned to darkness.
Likewise, the moon will not reflect the light of the sun as usual but will reflect the radiant glory of the redeemed—appearing as blood.
God will orchestrate these heavenly and earthly signs to draw a great multitude unto Himself in preparation for the catching away of the Church (Joel 2:30–32).
