“For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one” (Hebrews 10:34).
Life on earth has an end. Consequently, every possession of a person shall cease to be theirs the very day they die. However, there is one possession that lives on after their body is dead. It is the soul.
The body was formed out of the soil of the ground but the soul was formed out of God’s breath (Gen 2:7) so it has eternal existence. Therefore, the body returns to the soil at the point of death whilst the soul, returns to God (Ecc 12:7).
God has destined the soul for one of the two ultimate eternal destinations; heaven or hell. For those who believe in Christ Jesus as Saviour and Lord, He gives them eternal life so they never perish (John 10:27,28).
Their souls shall receive bodies made glorious after resurrecting in Christ, and shall dwell with God in heaven forever (1 Cor 15:50-53). However, for those who do not believe in Christ, their souls shall undergo everlasting destruction in hell (2 Thess 1:8,9).
Really, our most precious possession is eternal life, for it is that which shall keep the soul alive in a glorious body with God forever. Therefore, if someone does not have eternal life, they do not have any lasting possession.
All their possessions except the soul are temporal, and even their eternal soul shall be alive to suffer eternal punishment in hell.
It is good to work hard and acquire possessions for this life, but it is better to believe in Christ and receive eternal life that shall keep the soul and the resurrected body alive forever.
PRAYER: Father, thank you for providing eternal life in Christ Jesus to all who believe in him. May they treasure it above all their possessions, for it is the only possession that shall abide with them forever. Amen.
