The Ability To Speak Is an Important Skill For a Leader

WHEN GOD called Jeremiah, appointing him a prophet to the nations, he responded to the Lord, “I do not know how to speak…” (Jeremiah 1:6).

Moses made a similar admission when God sent him with a message. Moses said, “Oh my Lord, I am not eloquent…I am slow of speech and of tongue (Exodus 4:10).

These two verses of Scripture indicate that the ability to speak is an important skill for a leader. In other words, a person who cannot speak will find it very difficult to lead.

Speaking allows a person to share a message, an idea, a feeling or an emotion. Leaders speak to make known their plans including their visions and missions.

The world celebrates Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jack Welch, Billy Graham and Abraham Lincoln as great speakers.

However, when people talk about great speakers, they forget about the master speaker. Many have not paid attention to the awe-inspiring speaking ability of Jesus Christ.

The need to speak is not only vital in the fields of politics, business, family or school, but also in Christian ministry or the Church.

Jesus began to speak to crowds of people in cities, towns and villages when He started His public ministry. He spoke by preaching the Good News of the Kingdom of God for the salvation of souls.

Christ had no microphones, yet words from His lips were so potent that they convicted people of sin, healed the sick, cast out devils, raised the death, opened blind eyes, calmed the stormy sea and withered trees.

The words of Jesus Christ destroyed the works of the devil and also built the works of His Father. There was great power and authority in His words.

Jesus Christ’s speaking prowess should remind us that the ability to speak is an important skill to fulfill a ministry.

Firstly, we should pray and trust God to be with our mouths to explain the deep things regarding His Kingdom especially His mysteries with confidence.

Secondly, it is important that Christian leaders know themselves, develop a positive mindset, learn to live above reproach, and be people of integrity and high reputation.

Also, we should study the Bible and read other Christian materials so as to be well-informed about the message we wish to speak about.

Moreover, Christian leaders who speak in the name of the Lord must know the people they speak to. Knowing your audience helps you to choose words and language that they are familiar with and can understand.

Jesus Christ mastered all these skills and even more. No wonder His disciples could understand Him and recall His words after many years thereby enabling them to write the gospels and other books.

It must be stressed in conclusion that though no Christian can speak better than the Lord Jesus Christ those who train themselves shall speak like Him.
