Sin is a major subject in the Christian faith and doctrine. Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, humanity has lived under the power and bondage of sin. Sin is not only seen in the wrong things people do; it is also a corrupt nature within mankind that continually produces evil actions.
Wars, murder, drunkenness, sexual immorality, kidnapping, falsehood, arson, and many other evils are outward acts of sin. These sinful actions are the visible evidence of the sinful nature at work in humanity.
Throughout every generation, people everywhere, have recognised that sin is a serious problem, and have tried to restrain it. Nations enact laws, establish security agencies, and build prisons to punish evil acts and maintain order in society.
Parents, schools, and various authorities also teach morality and encourage people to live uprightly.
In spite of all these efforts, sin continues to dominate humanity. This is because the real problem is deeper than sinful acts alone; it is the sinful nature within man. Humanity does not merely commit sins occasionally—fallen man possesses a nature inclined towards sin.
The apostle Paul explains this struggle clearly:“For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me” (Romans 7:18–20).
Paul reveals the difference between sinful actions and the inward power of sin. The evil deeds are the fruit, but “sin that dwells within” is the root. A person may sincerely desire to stop lying, immorality, anger, drunkenness, or other sinful habits, yet still feel an inward pull towards them because the sinful nature remains active.
This shows the limitation of human effort. Self-discipline alone cannot remove the sinful nature from the human heart. Scripture says, “By the arms of the flesh no man can prevail” (1 Samuel 2:9). Human effort may restrain certain outward acts temporarily, but it cannot destroy the inward power of sin.
Many people attempt to stop sinful habits through resolutions, fear, punishment, or moral instruction, yet often return to the same sins because the root has not been dealt with. The issue is not merely what people do outwardly, but what they are inwardly apart from Christ.
Only God’s grace can free humanity from both the guilt of sinful acts and the controlling power of the sinful nature. This is why Jesus Christ came into the world. Scripture says, “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8).
Through His death and resurrection, Christ came to break the dominion of sin, redeem humanity from bondage, and restore mankind’s relationship with God. He not only forgives sinful acts but also gives a new nature to those who believe in Him.
The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ Jesus, works within believers to destroy the rule of the sinful nature and produce the life and character of Christ in them. This is why true freedom from sin is not achieved merely by trying harder, but by receiving the life of Christ within.
Jesus alone, who is sinless and has complete mastery over sin, can truly set people free. Therefore, it is written, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
True born-again Christians who walk by the Holy Spirit have been delivered from the slavery and dominion of sin. They may still face temptations and may stumble at times, but they no longer live in habitual and unrepentant sin because the life and seed of God abide in them.
The difference is important: believers may still be tempted in the flesh, but the sinful nature no longer reigns over them as master. Instead, the Holy Spirit now works within them to produce righteousness and holiness.
Therefore, hearing the gospel, believing in Jesus Christ, and receiving the indwelling Holy Spirit are essential. This is the only way people can truly be empowered to overcome sinful habits and live victoriously over sin.
This should teach us to pray concerning our weaknesses, ask God to deliver us from evil, yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit, live by God’s Word, set our minds on heavenly things, meditate on Scripture, and preach the gospel so that others also may experience salvation and freedom from the power of sin.
